Wine Country

Valle de Guadalupe Wine Region

Valle de Guadalupe, or Guadalupe Valley, a wine region in Baja California about half an hour northeast of Ensenada. The sunny, dry Mediterranean climate--similar to that of Southern California's inland valleys--is ideal for grapes, and the vineyards here have earned the respect of wine aficionados, though they're overlooked as a tourist destination.

Valle de Guadalupe is big--about two-thirds the size of Napa Valley

The wine country is located about seventy miles south of San Diego and can be accessed by heading south on the Tijuana-Ensenada toll road to the last collection station before the seaport of Ensenada. About one mile south of that toll station look for the sign Tecate Highway 3 or Ruta del Vino (Wine Route) and travel east on Highway 3 for seven miles until you drop down into the Baja wine country at San Antonio de las Minas. This is the western end of the Guadalupe Valley wine region which extends fourteen miles east towards Tecate ending near Km 73.5 at L.A. Cetto and Domecq wineries. Lodging is centrally located in the heart of the wine country!

Today there are over sixteen established wineries in Guadalupe Valley and four wineries in Ensenada which together produce over eighty percent of all Mexican wines. Many superior wines are being created to include both white and reds. L.A. Cetto Winery is the largest wine producer in Mexico and is mostly responsible for giving Mexican wines international attention through winning global awards and with aggressive, ingenious marketing tactics. Several boutique wineries: Vinicola Suenos, Monte Xanic, Chateau Camou, Dona Lupe, Bibayoff, Mogor-Badan, Baron Balch'e, Vinisterra and others make award-winning wines of distinct character. Dona Lupe Winery has a wonderful selection of premium organic wines, natural jams, jellies, salsa, cheese, herbs and more.

Spring and Summer are the perfect seasons to visit Mexico's premier wine country in Guadalupe Valley. It's less than a two hour drive south of San Diego on the Scenic Toll from Tijuana to Ensenada. If you haven't discovered Baja California's "silent revolution" in creating world class wines, you're really missing out! This hidden "garden of Eden" is located in a beautiful, rural region, abundant with surprises and undiscovered treasures. The area offers gourmet culinary delights, charming and romantic lodging, excellent wines and friendly residents from all over the world. Mexico's wine industry is emerging and creating wines that are a wakening and surprising the most sophisticated wine enthusiasts in the region and internationally. Come spend a day or two and experience "new world" wines with the "old world" charm of Mexico.
